Autonomous Innovative Vehicle Design Challenge

Students compete by re-engineering a toddler’s “Power Wheels” Jeep, creating a self-driving vehicle.

Overview:  Student teams re-engineer a “Power Wheels” toddler jeep, creating a self-driving autonomous vehicle.  Teams design sensor & control systems, install hardware, and write code, to accomplish a variety of missions.  Students are introduced to programming (C, Python, and others), Microcontrollers, and sensor technologies (GPS, Ultrasonic, Vision, etc) as they re-engineer their jeep to operate autonomously within a connected & autonomous vehicle theme.  Vehicle performance scores are based upon the level of autonomy and complexity of the tasks they can accomplish, including collision avoidance, platooning, parallel parking, and more.  Student teams submit presentation videos for judging prior to competition day, and then demonstrate their vehicle functionality live at the annual IVD Challenge Day where they compete for “Performance Awards”

Performance Missions: Basic Navigation, Collision Avoidance, Parallel Parking, Platooning, GPS Navigation, and more

Judged Awards:  Winners are determined by our panel of volunteer industry professionals as they review team Presentation Videos prior to competition day.  Judged awards include:

      • Innovation Award
      • Engineering Award
      • Craftsmanship Award
      • Ambassadorship Award
      • Presentation Award
      • Perfect Pitch Award

Costs:

      • Season registration fee to Square One: $2000
      • Estimated team expenses: $3000-$4000
      • Total approximate cost to field a team: $5000-$6000
      • Misc expenses (travel, tools, supplies, etc) will vary significantly by team

MDE 99h Grant:   All Square One IVD Teams are eligible for the 99h Grant Program from the Michigan Department of Education.  The 99h program provides funding for registration fees, base vehicles, tools & supplies, “build budget”, food & travel, and teacher stipends.

      • Rookie Team Grant: $6000 / year (max)
      • Veteran Team Grant: $5000 / year (max)
      • Coach Stipend Grant: $1500 / year (max)
      • Note: Teams must compete to fulfill grant requirements.  There is no limit to the number of 99h team grants that a district or school may receive.  Schools may have multiple teams from the same program, or multiple teams from multiple programs.
