Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicles                             April 18 & 19 at the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak MI via Macomb ISD
Educators for 4-12 grade youth, with an interest in hands-on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines as they apply to the marine environment are invited to attend this exciting 2-day workshop that provides a truly unique educational opportunity. Participants will receive an instruction manual, materials and support to design, engineer and build a fully functional underwater remotely operated vehicle or ROV.  STEM  skills and activities presented in this workshop support standards and benchmarks in science, math and technology.  Each team will receive lessons, design and build a fully functional ROV, control box, power source, and optical system valued at over $800
Cost:  $200 per team of three for workshop meals, materials and instruction.  SBCEUs are available Register via MISD site or contact Barb for details

Mini Innovative Vehicle Design Workshop                                    April 26 at the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak MI via Macomb ISD
Mini IVD is one of Square One's fastest growing signature series projects.  Student teams take a 1/8 scale RC Hobby gas-powered vehicle and re-engineer it to an electric vehicle.  Learn how to incorporate this high interest build around in your physics or technology classroom.  Participants will be eligible to apply for a 2013-14 school year Square One cash grant for completion of the project culminating in May 2014 competition at Michigan International Speedway.  Register via MISD site or contact Barb for details
 

GPS and Geocaching:  From Adventure to Benchmark                               Spring 2013 Date and Location TBD
Join in the fun and excitement of using GPS and Geocaching to make your science curriculum come alive.  Geocaching is a high tech cross-curricular scavenger hunt that will engage your students while making real-world technology accessible and understandable.  Teachers will spend the day learning how GPS works and participating in hands on activities applicable to the classroom and HSCE/GLCEs.  8:30am to 3:30pm at the Detroit Zoological Park.  Square One will supply a classroom set of GPS units (12 units) to the first five schools (teams of two teachers) that register.  ($1,500 value) Beyond those five teams, other schools are welcome to attend and use Square One's lending library of GPS units for their classroom use. (Certain rules for use and ownership apply)
Cost:  $125 (includes lunch and materials for two)

Science of Cell Phones and Wireless                                                                      Summer 2013
Discover an exciting and meaningful way to teach waves and the technology of wireless communication.   We use Iphones, Blackberrys, and other wireless devices every day, most students and teachers don't really understand the science behind these technological marvels.  These devices can be used to effectively teach physics concepts, technology, engineering, and mathematics.  Teachers should attend in teams of two.  8:30 – 4 both days

Tivitz Math and Strategy – Supports Key Concepts and Student Assessment         Closed

Join us for a daylong session facilitated by the dynamic Dr. Kathryn Clark, former chief scientist for human spaceflight at NASA, as she guides us through a hands-on workshop.  Dr. Clark is dedicated to a smarter America with emphasis on mathematics as the key to student success.  Learn how to use Tivitz games to develop and hone your students’ problem solving and critical thinking skills for the content in the Michigan Content Expectations in Number and Operations and Algebraic Thinking in a fun and challenging way.   Join in the conversation regarding its use as a unique formative assessment tool.  Teachers must attend in a team of two.  (Certain rules for use and ownership apply) Dinner included.  4:00-6:30pm Huron ISD, Bad Axe MI

Circuits to Circuits:  Building Amplifiers to Study Neurons in Your Classroom!          Date and location TBD
Neuroscience is an intrinsically interesting field to most teachers and students, yet the equipment and experimental methods have historically been expensive and difficult to implement. We will show you how to build a "Spiker Box," which is a simple low cost amplifier to investigate the neurons of insects. You will learn about principles of analog electronics design (resistors, capacitors, filters, grounds, etc) and assemble your own circuit board and enclosure to take back to your classroom. You will use your Spiker Box to experiment on the nervous system of crickets and cockroaches. The workshop will close with a challenge to design your own experiment and post the protocol online for other teachers to use. Welcome to the NeuroRevolution!  8:30am to 3:30pm
