Underwater Remotely Operated Vehicles                                             August 20-21 2012 Oak Park High School, Oak Park, MI
Educators for 4-12 grade youth, with an interest in hands-on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines as they apply to the marine environment are invited to attend this exciting 2-day workshop that provides a truly unique educational opportunity. Participants will receive an instruction manual, materials and support to design, engineer and build a fully functional underwater remotely operated vehicle or ROV.  STEM  skills and activities presented in this workshop support standards and benchmarks in science, math and technology.  Each team will receive lessons, design and build a fully functional ROV, control box, power source, and optical system valued at over $800
Cost:  $200 per team of three for workshop meals, materials and instruction.  SBCEUs are available

Science of Cell Phones and Wireless                                                           July 24 & 25 2012 Oakland Schools, Waterford MI
Discover an exciting and meaningful way to teach waves and the technology of wireless communication.   We use Iphones, Blackberrys, and other wireless devices every day, most students and teachers don't really understand the science behind these technological marvels.  These devices can be used to effectively teach physics concepts, technology, engineering, and mathematics.  Teachers should attend in teams of two.  8:30 – 4 both days

GPS and Geocaching:  From Adventure to Benchmark                                October 2012 Date and Location TBD
Join in the fun and excitement of using GPS and Geocaching to make your science curriculum come alive.  Geocaching is a high tech cross-curricular scavenger hunt that will engage your students while making real-world technology accessible and understandable.  Teachers will spend the day learning how GPS works and participating in hands on activities applicable to the classroom and HSCE/GLCEs.  8:30am to 3:30pm at the Detroit Zoological Park.  Square One will supply a classroom set of GPS units (12 units) to the first five schools (teams of two teachers) that register.  ($1,500 value) Beyond those five teams, other schools are welcome to attend and use Square One's lending library of GPS units for their classroom use. Tivitz Math and Strategy – Supports Key Concepts and Student Assessment      November 2012 Date and Location TBD
Join us for a daylong session facilitated by the dynamic Dr. Kathryn Clark, former chief scientist for human spaceflight at NASA, as she guides us through a hands-on workshop.  Dr. Clark is dedicated to a smarter America with emphasis on mathematics as the key to student success.  Learn how to use Tivitz games to develop and hone your students’ problem solving and critical thinking skills for the content in the Michigan Content Expectations in Number and Operations and Algebraic Thinking in a fun and challenging way.   Join in the conversation regarding its use as a unique formative assessment tool.  9am to 2pm at the Ann Arbor Hands On Museum, teachers must attend in a team of two.  (Certain rules for use and ownership apply)

Circuits to Circuits:  Building Amplifiers to Study Neurons in Your Classroom!      Date and location to be determined
Neuroscience is an intrinsically interesting field to most teachers and students, yet the equipment and experimental methods have historically been expensive and difficult to implement. We will show you how to build a "Spiker Box," which is a simple low cost amplifier to investigate the neurons of insects. You will learn about principles of analog electronics design (resistors, capacitors, filters, grounds, etc) and assemble your own circuit board and enclosure to take back to your classroom. You will use your Spiker Box to experiment on the nervous system of crickets and cockroaches. The workshop will close with a challenge to design your own experiment and post the protocol online for other teachers to use. Welcome to the NeuroRevolution!  8:30am to 3:30pm

Full Scale Innovative Vehicle Design Workshop August 2012
Full Scale IVD is one of Square One's signature series of projects.  Student teams design, build and drive an electric vehicle.  Details to follow.  This project comes with grant funds to support the completion of the project for competition in May 2012 at Michigan International Speedway.  Contact Jason Beatty, Project Specialist at jason@squareonenetwork.org for further information.

Mini Innovative Vehicle Design Workshop August 2012
Mini IVD is one of Square One's fastest growing signature series projects.  Student teams take a 1/8 scale RC Hobby gas-powered vehicle and re-engineer it to an electric vehicle.  This project comes with a Square One cash grant for completion of the project culminating in May 2012 competition at Michigan International Speedway.  Contact Dan Burnham, MIVD project specialist at Dan@squareonenetwork.org for further information.
